I'm very excited to announce my first book cover. An image I shot very early in my time in China (shown above on the right) was licensed to use as the basis for the cover of Ha Jin's forthcoming "Nanjing Requiem" novel. Ha Jin's work has been quite well regarded, though I haven't read any yet. This will give me a reason to do so! In case you have any other books that need cover images (or you want to buy a print), this one is available for licensing and purchase at my archive.

How much do you owe? published in Longshot #2: Debt

Longshot #2, p. 32 - July 2011
Longshot #2, p. 32 – July 2011
I'm happy to announce that I have a full page in the newest issue of Longshot Magazine, a publication produced over 48 hours from 3 p.m. July 29, 2011, through 3 p.m. July 31, 2011. The theme, "Debt," was announced, and all contributors and editors worked for the next 48 hours to produce a full print publication. A small army of editors and designers worked behind the scenes to make the magazine, its web presence, and a radio and podcast component. And all of the magazine’s content was created by another army of writers, graphic artists and photographers. Many of the contributions are available online, but some (including mine) are reserved for the print issue alone. It was an open submissions process during the 24 hours after the theme was announced at noon on Friday, and there are plans to publish online all 672 submissions made to the magazine over the weekend. The magazine has been getting some good press mentions. There’s a huge list of sponsors for this issue, which includes money from a a kickstarter campaign that raised more than double the desired amount of money. Best of all, through these sponsorships, contributors to this issue, which was primarily a labor of love for all involved, will be paid. Here is a selection of my work for the magazine.

MIT News Office – coverage of the 145th Commencement
Along with Dominick Reuter, I was hired by MIT's News Office to provide coverage of the 145th Commencement at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. A small selection of images were published in a slideshow at MIT's News Office website and as the background for MIT's homepage. Sadly, I don't have any screenshots of the homepage. I've also posted a few favorites from the day at the recent work section of my website. More pictures are available in my archive.

Harvard grad Nick Culbertson for the New Jersey Star-Ledger

New Jersey Star Ledger - 30 May 2011
New Jersey Star Ledger – 30 May 2011
I was hired in May to photograph the graduation of Nick Culbertson from Harvard University for the New Jersey Star-Ledger. The story was the culmination of years of reporting on Nick and his sister and grandmother, who were homeless and living in a motel in New Jersey. Through the determination of the family and a handful of community supporters, both children graduated from college. Read the story here: On graduation day, grandmother's toil pays off. Thanks to Chris at the Star-Ledger for hiring me for the shoot. Unfortunately, the story didn't get quite as much play as everyone had hoped, so I've also posted a few outtakes in the recent work section of this website.

A couple of months ago, I submitted We Chinese to Burn Magazine for consideration for publication. I've submitted essays in the past, and never gotten a response, so I was quite pleased to hear that Burn would publish a selection of images and interviews from the project.

I recently photographed Zaarly.com CEO Bo Fishback as he held meetings with colleagues and potential investors during the run-up to the May 10th launch of Zaarly.com. The website and product have already generated a huge amount of buzz and venture capital, but, in talking with Bo, his schedule wouldn't stop until well after the product launch. A picture from the shoot was featured at the top of the WSJ.com front page (seen above) and in the April 19, 2011, print edition of the Wall Street Journal. Outtakes from the shoot are available in the Recent Work section of my website: Outtakes: In Silicon Valley, Investors Are Jockeying Like It's 1999 - Wall Street Journal, 19 April 2011 You can read the story in the Wall Street Journal here: In Silicon Valley, Investors Are Jockeying Like It's 1999.

Tearsheet: The Really Smart Phone – Wall Street Journal, 23-24 April 2011

Wall Street Journal - 23-24 April 2011
Wall Street Journal – 23-24 April 2011
Late Thursday night I got a call from an editor at the Wall Street Journal asking if I was available early Friday morning for a shoot, details would be forthcoming. I was to go to MIT's Media Lab and photograph the research of Dr. Alex "Sandy" Pentland, whose research models human behavior through the use of cell phones, and get some portraits. Just about everything that could go wrong with a shoot did. It was short notice, the subject wasn't available until close to the deadline of the shoot, time with the subject was short, the subject's research is all on computers, and the lab was nearly empty. In spite of all that, Dr. Pentland was very gracious with his time and willing to show me a few locations around the building that he thought would be a good place for a portrait. And it was great to work with a new photo editor. The story is available online: The Really Smart Phone. You can see a few more pictures from the shoot at over in the recent work section: Outtakes: The Really Smart Phone

125 Years of Bosch – Global Impressions

M. Scott Brauer – 125 Years of Bosch – Global Impressions
A year ago, I got a strange email inquiry asking if I would be available for a shoot in the spring. Everything was very hush-hush; the advertising agency wouldn't say the client, the date, the subject, or the location. But the deal was good and it seemed like a good opportunity to branch out my business. As the time approached, I learned I'd be photographing a factory in Ulsan, South Korea, as part of a book, website, and advertising project celebrating the 125-year history of the global Bosch corporation. 125 photographers were to take picture at the exact same second, 0600 CET on May 20, 2010, as a way of capturing the global reach of Bosch and its many and varied projects. The lot I drew was to photograph activity at a joint operation factory operated by Samsung and Bosch where rechargeable car batteries were being manufactured. I traveled to the site twice, once in April a month before the shoot to scout the location and operations, and again in May for the final shoot. The scouting shoot was a long process, exploring the winding corridors of a major manufacturing plant. I don't know what it'd be like to wander around Willy Wonka's factories, but whenever I'm in a large operation such as this, I feel like I get a taste. The final shoot was the shortest shoot of my life. I got to the factory early and drank tea and watched a clock, counting down the appropriate second. Then a single shot, a few minutes gathering model releases, and I was done. Whew. Now, the campaign's website has been released and you can see the work from all 125 contributing photographers. Many friends and acquaintances were also involved in the project, too! Thanks to Katja and the rest of the crew at Dorten and also to Kyuwon and others at Bosch and Samsung.

Two pictures from my story about Ha Wenjin's no-kill animal shelter in Nanjing, China, were published on Globo Rural's Planeta Bicho website. This was my first publication in Brazil, and a welcome breath of fresh life to old pictures. Thanks to Alexandre for contacting me and also for paying the invoice in record time.
