Following Shenna Bellows’ senate campaign around Maine for MSNBC

Thanks to Johnny and the team at MSNBC.com for calling me for this assignment--it was a tough one, but there were a lot of good moments. I followed Shenna Bellows to Portland, Falmouth, Brunswick, and Kittery, Maine, as she campaigned at town Democratic caucuses for her US Senate campaign. Bellows is trying to unseat the incumbent Republican Susan Collins (whom, coincidentally, I met while photographing behind the scenes of Scott Brown's Senate campaign).

You can read Meredith Clark's story on MSNBC.com, which includes a few of my pictures from the day: A Democratic Senate candidate makes waves in Maine.

International Business Times has just published a handful of my images from Bashkortostan to accompany Joseph Hammond's piece on region: In Russia's Oil-Rich Bashkortostan, Site Of The Upcoming BRICS Summit, Terror Threats Undercut Investment Efforts. The images were taken last December as part of the International Center For Journalists' first US-Russia Young Media Professionals Exchange, in which both Joseph and I took part. You can see a fuller edit of the pictures on this site or my archive.

Prescription drug addiction among military veterans for the Wall Street Journal

Wall Street Journal - November 11, 2013
I spent a couple days this year working with Wall Street Journal writer Thomas Catan on a story about prescription drug addiction among military veterans with PTSD. We focused on two Marine veterans, one of whom died as we were working on the story. A few pictures ran inside to accompany the cover story. You can read the article online here: For Veterans With PTSD, A New Demon: Their Meds

I photographed a number of US military veterans who now work at MIT for MIT's News Office. We wanted to highlight the degree to which military service runs throughout the school, from maintenance workers to police to professors to administrators. The images ran in a slideshow on the front page of mit.edu for the weekend before Veterans Day 2013. The piece also complemented a renaming ceremony at MIT. Lobby 10, part of the Infinite Corridor underneath the Institute's famous dome, was renamed Memorial Lobby in honor of military veterans.

You can see more pictures from the series in a portrait portfolio on this site.

New Story: Fernald for the Wall Street Journal

Wall Street Journal – June 29, 2013 – At Nation’s Oldest Institution For the Disabled, 13 Lives in Limbo
I've added a new story to my website. Fernald is the story of the 13 remaining residents at the Fernald Developmental Center in Waltham, Massachusetts, the nation's oldest institution for the disabled. Shot over a couple of days for the Wall Street Journal, the story was exceptionally challenging to photograph. As with any story, my goal is photograph subjects with dignity and humanity in spite of their circumstances. My thanks go out to the residents of Fernald and their guardians for giving me access to tell their story. Also, thanks to Matt and Kate at the Wall Street Journal for calling me for this story. Be sure to read Clare Ansberry's excellent piece about the facility and watch Araby Williams' accompanying short video, which also features a few of my pictures.

Tearsheet: 10-year-old inventor for Wired

A few months ago I had the pleasure of photographing Owen Nannarone at his home in Scituate, Mass., for Wired. Owen is 10 years old and makes a hobby of inventing things, most recently a golf tee that can sense the direction and velocity of a golf ball after it's been hit. He tinkers on projects in a workshop in his family's basement and repairs and repurposes electronics found in local dumps and recycling facilities. You can see the article and few more photos at Wired.com. More images are available at my photoshelter archive.

Tearsheets: Chronicle of Higher Education

It's always hard to see how my work runs in the Chronicle of Higher Education because the publication isn't on any newsstands. Thankfully, my local library has a subscription, so I go by periodically to see which images make it into print. Above, you can see a couple portraits I shot for the paper, one (top) of SNHU president Paul LeBlanc and the other of Bryn Geffert, Librarian of the College at Amherst College. Thanks as always to Erica and the rest of the staff at the Chronicle for the assignments!

Excited to see that one of my pictures was printed big in French newspaper Libération last week. The picture, part of my work China Everbright, depicts a women in Yangshuo, China, butchering dogs for meat in a market. The photo was also recently awarded in the Photo Brigade's Documentary Photo Contest.
